In the children’s eyes, we see the honest spirit of Taiwan and the simplicity of the country life
Based on the short story “Bamboo Forest of Ghosts” written by the local writer Lee Tung from Yilan, “Sanko’s Summer Vacation” is about Santo and his friends’ childhood memory of a summer vacation which begins with the main character Santo taking train from Taipei to his family’s hometown Yilan by himself for the first time. In the children’s eyes, the world of the adults is revealed from a different perspective with childlike innocence and spontaneity, as well as their desire for love and company. The production brings actors and puppets together on stage, while the flexible movements of rod puppets as main characters, cartoonlike head designs, costume in early Taiwan’s rural style, and humorous language of everyday life collaboratively create a resonance for audience to feel the sincerity and warmth of a simple rural life.
